The Two Ways Good Sleep Leads to a Healthy Immune System.

No matter what precautions you take in your waking hours, if you don’t get a restful night’s sleep, your immune system will suffer.

This blog teaches:

  • The two ways sleep is imperative to an optimally-functioning immune system.
  • A routine designed to get your body ready for sleep.
  • The natural solution that can help ease your body into sleep, leaving you feeling refreshed, not groggy.

Everyone knows how good it feels to get a full night of rest… and how bad it feels when you don’t.

We wake up irritable and uneasy, and attempt to stumble through the day depleted and unmotivated.

The mental and emotional consequences of a bad night’s rest are important… but many are unaware of the physical toll on the body..

In fact, getting a good night’s sleep is imperative to maintaining an optimally-functioning immune system.

The relationship between sleep and the immune system.

If you want to do all you can to avoid getting sick, it’s imperative to make sure you are getting an appropriate amount of sleep. For most adults, that’s roughly 7-9 hours each night.

The Sleep Foundation explains:

“While more sleep won’t necessarily prevent you from getting sick, skimping on it could adversely affect your immune system, leaving you susceptible to a bad cold or case of the flu.”

Our body engages in numerous activities while we sleep, including relaxing the sympathetic nervous system, releasing various hormones, and processing the day’s events.

However, it is the following two vitally important activities that contribute greatly to the health of our immune system…

Fighting infection and inflammation with cytokines.

Our sleep cycle is the only time that our body both produces and releases cytokines.

These are a particular type of protein that fights inflammation, infection and trauma. For all intents and purposes, this is an immune response.

By skipping the sleep we need, our production and release of cytokines will dip, and our body will not heal the way it should.

This is corroborated by Eric J. Olson, M.D.:

“Studies show that people who don't get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as a common cold virus. Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick.”

Reducing the effects of chronic stress.

We mentioned that our body releases hormones when we sleep. Well, there’s one hormone that actually reduces during this time; cortisol.

Cortisol is our stress hormone. When our body encounters a perceived stressor, we release this hormone which prepares our body to enter fight or flight mode. Muscles tense, heart rate increases, breathing quickens, and much more.

While this response can be helpful in brief times of danger, it’s not very conducive to getting a good night’s rest. There have also been plenty of studies that detail the negative effects of chronic stress on the immune system.

By getting the right amount of sleep, we can help our body naturally reduce the burden that chronic stress places on our immune system.
